2. Thirumalai Nayak Palace:
Thirumalai Nayak Palace is an example of rich history of Madurai which can be seen only in a glance of this beautiful palace. This palace was built by the King Thirumalai Nayak in 1636 AD. Palace have very unique architectural style which is rarely seen in south. It is a beautiful work of an Italian architect who blended the different styles and made the master piece. It is fusion of Rajput, Islamic and Dravidian style. Whereas interior is quite contemporary. The palace is divided into two major parts, Swargavilasa and Rangavilasa, which include the royal residence, theatre, shrine, apartments, armoury, palanquin place, royal bandstand, quarters, pond and garden.
Apart from architecture, the light and sound show is something which catches the eyeballs of the tourists. The show conducts in both Tamil and English. They narrate the tales about the glory of King Thirumalai, his passion for arts, his victories in battle and his love for his subjects. The duration of each show is half an hour. 3. Samanar Hills:
Samanar hill is 15 km away from Madurai and the protected monument by ASI. The date of this site is recorded back in 9th century BCE. The hill top view and site of distinct history of Madurai is breath-taking. The Tamil- Brahmi inscriptions, stone beds and carved sculpture of Mahavir sings the story of this glorious hill.
Samanar hill have various caves in which Tamil Jain monks used to live. Apart from these interesting sites the sunset from this hill top is splendid.
4. Gandhi Memorial Museum:
Gandhi memorial museum is another main attraction among tourist. Being one of the five Gandhi Sanghralayas which have the blood stained garments of Gandhi which he wore when he got assassinated. Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai comes under the Peace Museums Worldwide selected by United Nations Organisation.
This museum conserves the letters written by Gandhi, depicts the history of freedom, visual biography of him which paintings, photographs, manuscript and artefacts used by Gandhi.
